In a significant announcement regarding its infrastructure, the York council has provided an important update on two major projects that impact the city. The initial plan to close Lendal Bridge for eight weeks this upcoming spring has been postponed due to delays in the York Station Gateway initiative.
Originally set to close in April 2026, Lendal Bridge requires urgent structural repairs involving metalwork, a situation that was first disclosed by YorkMix last October. This closure would have restricted all vehicular traffic, although pedestrians and possibly cyclists would have still been able to cross.
However, the council has now indicated that this closure is not expected to occur until 2027, citing unavoidable delays with the Station Gateway project as the primary reason. According to officials from the City of York Council, it is not feasible to progress both projects simultaneously without causing significant disruptions to the transportation network throughout the city. They emphasized that careful timing is essential to ensure the smooth flow of traffic while coordinating with other utilities and construction activities across York, aiming to prevent added costs and additional inconvenience for residents.
So, what exactly led to these delays in the Station Gateway project, which originally began in April 2024 and was supposed to finish before the Lendal Bridge repairs? The council noted that several unforeseen complications have arisen, including the need to reroute electrical supplies and address issues with an underground Victorian water tank. Cllr Kate Ravilious, the executive member overseeing transport, remarked, 'The updated timeline for the Station Gateway indicates it will take longer than initially anticipated. To keep the city functioning smoothly, we must ensure that the Station Gateway and Lendal Bridge projects do not overlap. Consequently, we will be postponing the Lendal Bridge work, while we continue to monitor and inspect the bridge to guarantee its safety for all users.'
Ravilious further explained that any delays to the Station Gateway project associated with the planned closure of Lendal Bridge could result in significant financial implications for the city and prolonged disruption for both local residents and businesses. Therefore, rescheduling the Lendal Bridge repairs is now necessary, with expectations set for 2027.
To ensure public safety, the council has committed to conducting enhanced inspections of the bridge in the coming months. They also stated, 'The scheduling of the Lendal Bridge repairs will depend on ongoing evaluations of other projects across the city, allowing us to find suitable times to carry out the necessary repairs while minimizing disruption to residents, commuters, tourists, and businesses.'
