SA Rugby has taken a significant step towards ensuring the safety and development of young rugby players by standardizing the age at which tackling is permitted. This decision will impact children aged 5 to 8, who will now focus on non-contact forms of the game, such as TAG and Touch Rugby. Full contact and tackling will only be introduced in the U9 age group, following a comprehensive program designed to build confidence and safety in contact. This initiative is a response to South Africa's lack of a defined tackle age, leading to inconsistencies and safety concerns across various rugby organizations. The proposal, developed by a special task team, aims to align with international best practices and models, such as the Blue Bulls, who have successfully implemented similar strategies. By delaying tackling, the focus is on fun and fundamental skill development, ultimately enhancing safety and long-term player performance. The task team's work, which included extensive surveys among primary school coaches, received overwhelming support for a standardized national approach. The implementation of this new tackle age standard will begin in 2026, with enhanced coach education and mandatory online certifications to ensure a consistent and safe rugby experience for all young players.
