Remembering Ronald 'Ron' Larder (1956-2025) - A Life of Service, Passion, and Family (2026)

It’s hard to believe that someone as vibrant and full of life as Ronald 'Ron' William Larder is no longer with us. His sudden passing on December 4, 2025, has left a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew him. Born on November 30, 1956, in the quaint town of New Ross, Nova Scotia, Ron was one of ten children born to the late Clarence Patrick Larder Sr. and Mary O’Neta 'Neta' (Cooke) Larder, a family whose legacy is as rich as the province’s history itself.

Growing up in the 1950s and 60s, Ron earned the playful nickname 'Housefly'—a moniker that stuck because, despite spending most of his summers outdoors, he was always the first to buzz inside at the slightest chance. Ironically, this 'housefly' would later become an avid outdoorsman, proving that sometimes the most unexpected traits can define us. His love for nature blossomed in his later years, a beautiful twist on his childhood persona.

Ron’s educational journey took him from New Ross Consolidated School to Nova Scotia Community College, with additional courses at St. Mary’s and Dalhousie Universities. He dedicated three decades of his life to serving the Province of Nova Scotia, first as a Program Administration Officer for 28 years and then as an Income Assistance Caseworker for 2 years. His unwavering commitment earned him a 30-year service award, a testament to his dedication and hard work. During his working years, Ron called Kentville, NS, home, and in retirement, he briefly lived in LaHave before settling in Bridgewater, NS.

But here’s where it gets interesting: Ron’s passions were as diverse as they were engaging. In his youth, he was a basketball enthusiast, part of the New Ross team that won the New Year’s Classic in 1974. Beyond sports, he was a collector of coins, a connoisseur of vinyl music, and an adventurer who loved camping, hiking, fly fishing, and photography. His fascination with geology led him to gold panning, and since 1993, he owned and operated Raw Earth Explorations, becoming the only prospector in the Larder family. And this is the part most people miss: Ron was rarely seen without his signature Tilley hat, a quirky detail that added to his charm.

Known for his kind heart and soft-spoken nature, Ron was the master of seafood chowder and the host of an annual house party during the Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom festivities—an event that brought joy to many. He found peace in walks along the South Shore beaches, particularly Rissers, and on the trails in Bridgewater. His gentle spirit, love for family and friends, and appreciation for life’s quiet moments will forever be cherished.

Ron is survived by nine siblings: Clarence Patrick 'CP' (Jane), Dr. Thomas 'Tom' (retired, Heather), Brenda (Jim), Derek (retired, Sharon), Wanda (Sheldon), Twyla (Brian), Joseph 'Joe' (Donna), Rosco (retired, Qui), and Todd (Shirley), as well as 17 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Gwendlyn Janet Larder, and niece Tina Larder.

A celebration of Ron’s life will take place in New Ross in the Spring/Summer of 2026, with details to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Diabetes Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements are entrusted to the R.A. Corkum Funeral Home, Wileville.
