It seems the UK is in for a rather dramatic weather shift! The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow across the east of England, signaling that residents should prepare for potential disruptions. Imagine waking up to a blanket of white, only for it to turn into a slushy mess!
The experts at the Met Office are predicting that the rain that graced (or perhaps drenched) the UK on Sunday morning is likely to transform into sleet and even snow. They're forecasting up to 4cm of snow in some areas. And this isn't just a light dusting; the heaviest snowfall is expected to settle in the Lincolnshire Wolds and parts of Norfolk and Suffolk. However, don't get too cozy with your snow boots just yet, as the snow is anticipated to melt back into rain as the day progresses.
While several weather warnings have thankfully expired over the weekend, this new snow alert is officially in effect for parts of eastern England until 4 pm on Sunday.
But here's where it gets a bit more serious... The Environment Agency is urging everyone to stay on high alert due to the ongoing flood risk. As of Sunday morning, there were a staggering 74 flood warnings and 162 flood alerts in place across England.
In an update on Sunday afternoon, the Environment Agency highlighted that the effects of groundwater flooding are expected to persist in parts of the south of England for the next five days. They also warned of continued flooding from rivers in Somerset and Wiltshire, with river flooding also a possibility in parts of the Midlands from Sunday through Tuesday. This means properties could be affected, and travel disruptions are highly probable.
And this is the part most people miss... While the rain is expected to clear in some eastern regions by evening, the Met Office warns that heavy showers will continue through much of the night. The snow warning itself specifically mentions that "a spell of snow may lead to some disruption to travel."
Met Office meteorologist Liam Eslick offered a glimmer of hope, noting that temperatures on Sunday evening are not expected to drop significantly below freezing overnight, so we might avoid widespread frost in England.
Looking ahead, Monday promises a mix of sunny spells and showers, with a chance of hail and thunder in some locations. Tuesday, however, is set to be a much drier day with plenty of sunshine. But don't get too comfortable! By Wednesday, there's an increased likelihood of rain, and perhaps even some snow in the South.
