Mark Henry Recalls D-Generation X's Controversial Parody of The Nation
In a recent interview with Inside The Ropes, Mark Henry discussed the controversial parody of The Nation by D-Generation X (DX) during the WWE Attitude Era in 1998. The segment featured Sean "X-Pac" Waltman wearing blackface to resemble Henry, which sparked a heated debate.
Henry revealed that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, a key member of DX, was initially against the idea. "He didn't like it from the beginning," Henry said. "He was like, 'I don't like it. I don't like people dressing up like us. I don't like people putting blackface on.'" Despite Johnson's reservations, Henry saw it as part of the entertainment business, and he didn't take it personally.
However, X-Pac's perspective changed when he faced backlash. "X-Pac didn't know until probably like a month or two after they started taking heat," Henry explained. "He was like, 'Man, y'all dressed up like black people and you put makeup on to look like that.'" Henry then educated X-Pac about the historical context of minstrel shows, which involved dressing up in blackface to portray exaggerated stereotypes of Black people. This revelation deeply affected X-Pac, who was unaware of the racist history behind the practice.
Henry emphasized the importance of understanding the impact of such actions, stating, 'America doesn't teach the nasty history. They just sweep it under the rug.' X-Pac's realization led to a significant learning curve for everyone involved. Henry defended himself by clarifying that he was not racist but that the situation was deemed racist due to its distasteful nature. He questioned the options available to him, asking, 'What was I supposed to do? Just say I'm not going to go to work?'
The incident served as a valuable lesson for all parties involved, highlighting the complexity of navigating sensitive topics in entertainment.
