Lara Croft’s era with Camilla Luddington is drawing to a close, as a new face steps into the legend’s boots. The beloved heroine’s journey through the Survivor Trilogy is ending, even as Alix Wilton Regan teases that the adventure is far from over: “we're just getting started.”
I could not be prouder of what we created.
Luddington first brought Lara Croft to life in the 2013 reboot, which follows a young, scrappy Lara washing ashore on Yamatai. She returned to the role for Rise of the Tomb Raider in 2015 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018, solidifying her as a defining voice for the character.
Now, a new actor has stepped into Lara Croft’s legendary silhouette for upcoming projects. During The Game Awards, Crystal Dynamics and Amazon announced that Alix Wilton Regan will portray Lara Croft in their all-new Tomb Raider game, as well as in the remake of the original game, tentatively titled Legacy of Atlantis.
Shortly after the announcement, Luddington shared her farewell to the character, expressing gratitude for the Tomb Raider community. She wrote on Instagram that joining the lineage of Lara Crofts was an incredible honor and that the Survivor Trilogy marked a decade of unforgettable adventures. She added that she couldn’t be prouder of what they created, and she welcomed Regan’s opportunity to carry the saga forward, even offering a playful invitation to borrow her Croft Manor archery gear if Regan ever needs it.
Regan responded to the news with visible excitement, calling becoming Lara Croft the absolute highlight of her career and saying the role has surpassed her wildest dreams. She echoed the sentiment that this is only the beginning, declaring, “We are just getting started.”
Prior to landing the Lara Croft role, Regan built an acting résumé with notable performances such as Aya in Assassin’s Creed Origins, Lea in Lies of P: Overture, and Alt Cunningham in Cyberpunk 2077. She was also attached to a now-cancelled reboot of Perfect Dark where she was set to portray Joanna Dark.
Tomb Raider Catalyst will reportedly transport Lara to northern India, arriving in 2027 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam. Meanwhile, Legacy of Atlantis—the full remake of the original title—aims for a release next year. Both projects promise to expand the franchise in bold, new directions.
Beyond games, Amazon is developing a live-action Tomb Raider series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with filming expected to begin soon. Sophie Turner's portrayal of Lara Croft will anchor the cast, joined by Martin Bobb-Semple in a major undisclosed role and Sigourney Weaver, who will portray the character Wallace.
The excitement around these announcements is palpable. With fresh talent stepping into Lara Croft’s iconic boots and ambitious new projects underway, fans have plenty to anticipate. But here’s where it gets controversial: does handing the torch to a new actor change what Lara Croft represents, or does it simply extend her legacy to new audiences?
