The European People's Party (EPP) has penalized Hungary's opposition party, Tisza, for their refusal to support Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission President, during a motion of censure vote. Tisza, led by Péter Magyar, is a significant opposition force in Hungary, challenging the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the upcoming parliamentary elections on April 12. The party's membership in the EPP Group, which supports their campaign against Orbán's nationalist government, adds a layer of complexity to the situation.
The EPP Group introduced new rules earlier this week to enhance voting discipline, automatically penalizing members who deviate from the party's stance on crucial votes. As a result, Tisza's seven MEPs face severe consequences, including a six-month ban from speaking at plenary sessions and the inability to hold rapporteurship for new files in the Parliament.
Péter Magyar, the party leader, expressed their disappointment on Facebook, stating, 'We were punished for not participating in the vote on Thursday, contrary to the EPP's position.' He emphasized the party's independence, saying, 'Tisza politicians have no owners.'
The motion of censure was initiated by the far-right Patriots for Europe group regarding the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement, but it received overwhelming support from the European Parliament. Tisza's decision to abstain from voting for von der Leyen remains unexplained.
Other EPP MEPs also diverged from the party line, with four abstaining and one, Jessika van Leeuwen from the Dutch Farmer–Citizen Movement, voting against von der Leyen. This dissent highlights the internal divisions within the EPP Group.
Prime Minister Orbán has labeled Tisza as a 'Brussels puppet,' suggesting that their election victory would undermine Hungary's sovereignty. He has portrayed Magyar as subservient to EU leaders and warned of catastrophic consequences if Tisza's Europeanist politics were to prevail.
The upcoming elections present a strategic choice between Orbán's nationalist-sovereignist party and Tisza's Europeanist platform. Orbán's government billboards have depicted Magyar as a puppet of von der Leyen, further intensifying the political tension.
