Another Bold Move from Embracer: Two More Studios Offloaded in the Name of Profitability
Embracer Group has once again trimmed down its vast gaming portfolio. In a freshly released statement, the company confirmed the sale of two smaller studios—Arc Games and Cryptic—to Project Golden Arc, Inc. The transaction, valued at roughly $30 million in net cash proceeds, marks yet another step in Embracer’s ongoing effort to streamline its operations and boost financial health. Notably, Embracer will maintain publishing rights to the Remnant franchise, which falls under Arc Games’ banner.
According to the press release, this latest divestiture aligns with Embracer's renewed focus on what it calls its "strategic assets and core intellectual properties," emphasizing improved profitability and stronger free cash flow across the group.
The Great Embracer Sell-Off Continues
It’s no secret that Embracer Group has been aggressively restructuring for the past year and a half. After a monumental $2 billion deal fell through, the company was forced to make sweeping operational changes—cutting costs, closing projects, and letting go of entire teams. Since then, nearly 100 projects have been shuttered, thousands of employees have lost their positions, and household-brand studios such as Saber Interactive (sold for $500 million) and Gearbox Entertainment (acquired by Take-Two for $460 million) have moved on.
This new divestiture sends Arc Games and Cryptic Studios out from under the Embracer umbrella—an intentional move meant to reposition the company for a leaner, more efficient future.
CEO Phil Rogers Speaks Out
Commenting on the deal, Embracer CEO Phil Rogers described the move as critical to the company’s long-term goals:
“This transaction supports our key priorities by strengthening our focus on strategic assets and core IPs in Embracer while improving profitability and free cash flow. The deal also allows the online multiplayer game Fellowship, developed by a talented external team in Stockholm, to find a new and fitting home within Coffee Stain Group. I would like to thank the teams at Arc and Cryptic for their dedication over the past four years and wish them success ahead—we’re confident they’ll continue to innovate and thrive.”
Interestingly, Project Golden Arc—the buyer of both studios—will be led by the existing leadership team from Arc Games, suggesting a smooth transition that keeps the creative vision intact. The company stated that the transaction is expected to close soon, pending the usual regulatory and procedural approvals.
