The tragic news has emerged: Vince Zampella, the renowned video game developer who played a pivotal role in creating the highly successful "Call of Duty" franchise and led Respawn Entertainment, has passed away. He was only 55 years old.
Electronic Arts, the parent company of Respawn, confirmed Zampella's death in a statement provided to the Los Angeles Times on Monday. According to reports from NBC 4, Zampella was involved in a fatal car accident on Sunday afternoon along the scenic Angeles Crest Highway, which is known for its breathtaking views but also its treacherous conditions. The crash, which involved a striking red 2026 Ferrari 296 GTS, resulted in the deaths of Zampella and another individual, with the identities yet to be disclosed by the county coroner, as indicated by California Highway Patrol (CHP) spokesperson Sgt. Daniel Keene.
A passionate car enthusiast, Zampella was an avid collector of sports cars, frequently showcasing his impressive vehicles and sharing snapshots from racing events on his Instagram account. The representative from Electronic Arts expressed deep sorrow over this "unimaginable loss," extending condolences to Zampella's family, friends, and all those whose lives were impacted by his contributions to the gaming industry. "Vince’s influence on the video game industry was profound and far-reaching," the statement remarked.
The CHP reported that they received an emergency call at 12:43 p.m. regarding the crash at Mile Post 62.70. Officers arrived to find that the vehicle had veered off the road, collided with a concrete barrier, and subsequently caught fire. Preliminary investigations suggested that the car was traveling southbound when it suddenly left the roadway for reasons that are still unclear. Tragically, the passenger was ejected from the vehicle while the driver remained trapped inside, and both individuals succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
Footage circulating online captured the moment a red Ferrari exited a tunnel on the highway at high speed before crashing into a barrier and igniting into flames, illustrating the dramatic and devastating nature of the incident.
The Ferrari 296 GTS is notable for being a hybrid convertible, featuring a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine paired with an electric motor, producing a remarkable total output of 819 horsepower. The Angeles Crest Highway, stretching 66 miles through mountainous terrain, is a cherished route for motorcycle riders and car aficionados. However, it is also notorious for its history of serious accidents, raising concerns about safety on this picturesque drive.
As investigations continue, the CHP has not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
Vince Zampella was instrumental in shaping the modern gaming landscape. He co-founded Infinity Ward in 2002 alongside Jason West and Grant Collier, leading to the release of the original "Call of Duty" in 2003. Activision acquired the studio soon after, and the franchise has since exploded into a massive cultural phenomenon with numerous sequels and spin-offs, including the latest installment, "Call of Duty: Black Ops 7," which launched in November.
Following a well-publicized split from Activision, Zampella and West established Respawn Entertainment in 2010. Although West departed the company in 2013 due to unspecified personal matters, Zampella remained at the helm, guiding the development of several acclaimed titles such as "Titanfall," "Apex Legends," and the latest iterations of the "Medal of Honor" series. Respawn also expanded its portfolio with successful story-driven titles within the "Star Wars" universe, including "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order" and its sequel, "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor," starring Cameron Monaghan.
Zampella also took the lead at the Los Angeles branch of DICE, which underwent a rebranding in 2021 to become Ripple Effect Studios, where he assumed oversight of the "Battlefield" franchise.
