BYD Unveils the World's Longest-Range EV: The Denza Z9 GT
BYD is set to revolutionize the electric vehicle market with its latest offering, the Denza Z9 GT, which boasts an impressive range of over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) on a single charge. This groundbreaking achievement has led BYD to claim that the Denza Z9 GT is "the world's longest pure electric driving range vehicle."
But is this claim accurate? Let's delve into the details and explore the capabilities of this cutting-edge EV.
The Denza Z9 GT: A High-Performance Luxury EV
Denza, BYD's luxury brand, recently unveiled the all-new Z9 GT, a high-performance luxury electric shooting brake. With a CLTC range of 1,036 kilometers (644 miles) on a single charge, the Z9 GT is a formidable contender in the EV market.
This impressive range represents a 64% improvement over the current Z9 GT EV, which has a CLTC range of up to 630 kilometers (391 miles). The new Z9 GT is available in both fully electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrains, catering to various driver preferences.
Battery Packs and Range Variations
The Denza Z9 GT is offered with two battery packs: 102.326 kWh and 122.496 kWh, providing CLTC ranges of 820-1,036 kilometers (509-644 miles) respectively. Interestingly, the standard Z9, powered by the same battery packs, will have a CLTC driving range of up to 1,068 kilometers (664 miles), making it potentially the longest-range EV. However, Denza has yet to announce this feature.
Performance and Technology
The Denza Z9 GT is a powerhouse, featuring a single-motor rear-mounted electric motor with 370 kW (496 hp) or a tri-motor configuration with a combined 850 kW (1,140 hp). This represents a significant upgrade from the 710 kW (952 hp) in the outgoing Denza Z9 GT.
Inside, the luxury shooting brake boasts a massive 17.3-inch central touchscreen, dual 12.3-inch driver cluster and passenger displays, and a sleek design that rivals the Porsche Panamera in size.
Launch and Pricing
BYD will reveal pricing closer to the launch date, but the current Denza Z9 GT EV starts at 354,800 yuan ($51,700) in China. While currently sold only in China, BYD plans to expand its Denza brand to Europe and the UK this year, challenging established luxury brands.
The Competition and Future Possibilities
It's worth noting that BYD is not alone in pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology. Prototypes like the Mercedes EQXX, equipped with 600W of solar panels on the roof, have achieved over 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) range on a single charge. Additionally, the Lucid Air Grand Touring set a Guinness World Record for traveling over 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) on a single charge.
As battery, powertrain, and other EV technologies continue to advance, we can expect electric vehicles to become even more efficient, safer, and faster to charge. The future of EV technology is bright, and BYD's Denza Z9 GT is undoubtedly a significant step forward in this exciting journey.
