Boeing Secures Deal for 15 More U.S. Air Force KC-46A Tankers

EVERETT, Wash., Nov. 25, 2025 — The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] has received approval for a Lot 12 contract from the U.S. Air Force, covering 15 extra KC-46A Pegasus tanker planes, with a total value reaching $2.47 billion.

“This contract milestone guarantees steady manufacturing operations, including our extended procurement networks for essential components, allowing us to keep providing the unparalleled features of the KC-46A,” explained Jake Kwasnik, vice president and manager of the KC-46 program.

The American KC-46A squadron has surpassed 150,000 hours in the air, demonstrating intense use in training exercises, active missions, and worldwide assignments.

Globally, there are 183 KC-46A multi-role aerial refueling jets either in service or slated for delivery, offering cutting-edge benefits to joint military efforts and partner nations. This figure includes 98 units handed over to the U.S. Air Force, six to Japan's Air Self-Defense Force, and four ordered by the Israel Air Force.

Recent agreements, such as the one from July 2024 focused on readiness and performance improvements, are boosting the KC-46A's communication systems, digital links, and awareness of surroundings. This ensures the KC-46 maintains its status as the planet's premier multi-role aerial refueling platform.

Now, for those new to the world of aerial refueling, think of the KC-46A as a flying gas station that extends the range and endurance of fighter jets, bombers, and other aircraft during long-haul missions—it's like giving a car an extra tank while it's already cruising down the highway. This isn't just about logistics; it empowers global operations, from humanitarian aid drops to strategic defense. And this is the part most people miss: despite its advanced tech, the program has faced its share of delays and safety concerns in the past, leading to debates about whether such investments are worth the cost. But here's where it gets controversial—some argue these upgrades are a smart fix to past issues, turning a rocky start into a symbol of innovation triumph. Others question if taxpayer dollars could be better spent elsewhere, like on emerging drone technologies or sustainable aviation. What do you think? Does this contract represent a wise allocation of resources, or is it time to rethink priorities in modern warfare? Share your takes in the comments—agree or disagree, we'd love to hear your perspective!
