Bold headline: A long-time fugitive returns to watch the Olympics, only to be arrested on the spot. This incident highlights how past crimes can catch up with you, even when you’ve vanished for years.
A 44-year-old Slovak national was arrested in Milan on the evening of February 12, after Italian prosecutors issued a warrant 16 years ago. The Carabinieri reported that authorities reacted to a long-standing case by detaining him on the spot when he checked into a guesthouse on the outskirts of Milan, then transporting him to San Vittore prison in central Milan.
Despite being on Italy’s wanted list, the man had traveled back to the country to support Slovakia’s national hockey team at the Winter Olympics. He had planned to attend Slovakia’s opening ice hockey game, but instead his return led to immediate arrest. According to the Carabinieri, he faces a total of 11 months and seven days to serve for a series of shop thefts carried out in 2010.
Meanwhile, Slovakia’s men’s hockey team began their Milano Cortina Games with a 4-1 victory over Finland at Milan’s Santagiulia Arena, marking a decisive start to their Olympic campaign.
